A new high-efficiency waste-fired cogeneration power plant (or combined heat and power plant, CHP) was built in Kaunas with an electric capacity of about 24 MW and heat production capacity of about 70 MW. Such capacity allows to incinerate about 255,000 tonnes of municipal waste generated in the region which were unfit for sorting and generate about 500 GWh of heat and about 170 GWh of electricity per year. The power plant can cover about 40% of the heat demand of Kaunas city.
Address: Veterinarų g. 19, Biruliškės, LT-54469, Kaunas reg.
The Kaunas CHP is located in the territory of Kaunas Free Economic Zone, in Biruliškės, Karmėlava eldership, Kaunas municipality, near the highway Vilnius-Klaipėda.
Criteria for choosing the location:
Suitable logistics infrastructure. Sufficient access to engineering networks: natural gas, electricity networks and Kaunas city central heating networks. Suitable size of the land plot (4.45 ha) and its designated purpose. Close to consumers: Building such a power plant near potential heat and electricity consumers is one of the key criteria for efficient energy use. The territory of the Kaunas CHP does not fall within and does not border with any protected national territories or territories of the European ecological network Natura 2000.
