The plan is to build a new high-efficiency waste-fired cogeneration power plant in Kaunas with an electric capacity of about 24 MW and heat production capacity of about 70 MW. Such capacities will allow rationally using about 200 000 tonnes of municipal waste generated in the region and left after sorting, and producing about 500 GWh of heat and about 170 GWh of electricity per year. The power plant will be able to produce about 40 percent of heat demand of Kaunas city.
Address: Veterinarų g. 19, Biruliškių village, LT-54469, Kaunas district.
The Kaunas cogeneration power plant is being built and will operate in the land plot located in the territory of Kaunas Free Economic Zone, in Biruliškės village, Karmėlava eldership, Kaunas district municipality, near the highway Vilnius – Klaipėda.
Criteria for choosing the venue:
Suitable logistics infrastructure. Appropriate access to engineering networks: natural gas, electricity networks and Kaunas city district heating networks. Suitable size of the land plot (4.45 ha) and its designated purpose. Close to users. Building such a power plant near potential heat and electricity consumers is one of the key criteria for efficient energy use. The territory of the land plot of the Kaunas cogeneration power plant planned to be built and operated does not fall within and does not border with any protected national territories or territories of the European ecological network Natura 2000.
